With the help of Alzheimer Scotland and St. Patrick’s Primary School (COWI’s nominated charity and school partners for the Glasgow office), they’ve brought colour and character to the station platform and stairwells.

The nominations for this year’s Inspiring City Awards have been announced – and Glasgow Wood Recycling is excited to be finalists in two categories! We have been selected for the Alastair Malloy Award for Inclusive Volunteering (sponsored by Volunteer Glasgow) and the Environmental Award.

Now in their seventh year, the Inspiring City Awards bring to life the achievements and journey of the people and organisations who make a big difference to the lives of Glaswegians.

The awards, organised by The Herald and the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, were ‘born out of the desire to recognise businesses, education institutions and charities who, every day go beyond the call of duty to make Glasgow shine.’

Speaking about the nominations, Glasgow Wood Recycling’s Chief Executive Peter Lavelle said:

“The whole team at Glasgow Wood Recycling is delighted to be recognised for our volunteering and environmental efforts. Our social enterprise being nominated for two Inspiring City Awards really acknowledges the huge amount of commitment our team put in to the model of community wood recycling.”

Richard Muir, Deputy Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, commented in The Herald:

“Glasgow never ceases to amaze me, with so many outstanding contributions from across the city. The impressive calibre of the 2019 entries demonstrate that Glasgow is a place whose citizens and businesses contribute freely to its culture and economy to the benefit of us all.”

The winners will be announced at the 2019 Inspiring City Awards, which will take place at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow on Thursday September 5, 2019 – and will be hosted by Amy Irons and David Farrell.

About Glasgow Wood Recycling’s Work

Helping businesses and communities do good with wood!

Glasgow Wood Recycling is a social enterprise and charity which finds meaningful ways to reuse and recycle waste wood. The wood waste that we collect from all over Glasgow is gathered and sorted at our South Street workshop, then reused to make quality furniture and design bespoke pieces for home, businesses and social sector organisations – anything from tables in bars to eco-gardens in schools! Through these activities we provide volunteer and training opportunities to local people, as a practical way of tackling unemployment and social exclusion.

Benefiting the environment and community

By reducing the amount of wood sent to landfill, Glasgow Wood Recycling can reduce its environmental impact. Each tonne of wood which rots in landfill is thought to produce a quantity of methane as harmful as 600 kg of CO2. So far Glasgow Wood Recycling has diverted over 4000 tonnes of wood from being wasted. We have also provided 740 volunteering opportunities as well quality training – and a route to employment – for over 190 people.

“I enjoy all the aspects of volunteering at GWR. It’s given me a new interest and I feel like I can contribute to the work here. I have learned new skills with power tools and various different woodwork techniques.”

Liam

“It’s made a big difference for me. 110%, without a shadow of a doubt. It’s going outside of your comfort zone – when you go and explore another field. I’ve learnt a lot – It’s great to be able to pick up a tool and you know how to use it.”

Williams

“I think there’s a strong sense of community here. People are working together for shared goals. There’s space for lots of different people to be here. It feels valuable just to be an individual that might have different skills and different understandings of things.”

Merle

“We’re not all skilled, a lot of us are volunteers so there’s no great expectation that you’re going to do it perfectly. I like that. There’s no pressure on you. You just try to do your best and when you complete something it’s always a good sense of achievement.”

Last year we were recognised with a Cycle Friendly Employer Award after building a new bike shed, with the help of Cycling Scotland and the Glasgow Eco Trust, and providing drying and repair facilities for our cyclists. We took part in the ‘Around the World’ Cycle Challenge again this May – with the collective GWR team cycling over 7600km (2500km more than we managed last year) and one team member coming third overall!

We asked our team for feedback about cycling to work, the May Cycle Challenge and how they would encourage others to start cycling.

“I cycle into work 5 days a week usually. It’s quicker, easier and better for the environment than taking the bus. Obviously it’s cheaper and I enjoy the exercise and the speed!

We took part in the May Cycle Challenge. I got really into it with longer rides at the weekend and after work. It was great seeing how many miles I was doing.

It would be good if the cycle path network was extended. That would make Glasgow a much safer city to cycle in.”

Katie, Product Design

“I cycle every day! I love cycling – it’s the most efficient way of transport and I love the freedom.

It keeps you fit, saves you money, makes you happy and connects you with like minded people.

Unfortunately you can’t do much about the rain in Glasgow!”

Marketa, Workshop Volunteer

“Unfortunately I missed out a bit on the Cycle Challenge as my bike was broken. But I did use the NextBikes when I could. The NextBikes are a good idea. They are good value for money – much cheaper than public transport – and are quite handy for some short journeys that aren’t well served by public transport, such as the Southside to the East End.

I think should expand the route to make it more accessible across the city though. For example, the nearest point to Glasgow Wood Recycling is Partick Train Station which is a 30 minute walk. If there was a closer point I would probably use them everyday.

There have been some improvements over the last few years but I think having more dedicated cycle lanes in Glasgow would also make it safer & more appealing to people.”

Seamus, Social Media and Website

“I cycle to work 5 times a week. I enjoy it – it keeps me fit, it’s free and it doesn’t hurt the planet. It gives me freedom to explore and ‘me’ time. I arrive ready to start the day – I’ve done my planning on the way in and then I do my debrief on the way home.

I enjoyed the Cycling Challenge. I cycled a lot more than last year and came 3rd overall – which was great!”

Eileen, Development Worker

“I cycle to work 2 to 3 times a week. It’s faster than the bus, I get exercise and I like the adrenaline. I always cycled in when I lived in Copenhagen, where I found it very relaxing and therapeutic. It’s not so relaxing on the Glasgow roads! They should definitely improve and expand the cycle lanes in to make it more appealing.

The May Cycle Challenge was great – it motivated me to fix my bike, to get active and get competitive.”

Elizabeth, Retail
