Brediland Road Garden

Ortus Design were asked by Brediland Care House to create an outdoor space which encouraged young people to spend more time outdoors and enjoy the garden with family, friends and staff. To accompany winding paths and a summer house, they recruited Glasgow Wood to build bespoke bug hotels, seating, a swing and a pair of arches. Together, they create different spaces to explore, relax and enjoy nature.

The Nook from SAMH provides barrier-free access to mental health support, with no need to book an appointment, no need for referrals, and no waiting lists. Anyone looking for support can walk through the door and get help fast. As designers of the space in Merchant City, Finni Porter Chambers and Anna Campbell Jones utilised a wide range of local suppliers and makers to fit out the space, including Glasgow Wood.

HALO Gardens

Since the rise of social distancing, erz. studio wanted to find a way for people to be together in a safe and comfortable space. This was when the HALO Gardens project was born. With our help, these outdoor sanctuaries are now popping up across Glasgow. Currently, there are gardens at Royal Alexandra and Queen Elizabeth University Hospitals, along with Yoker, Stobhill and Burton-on-Trent.

Gro Garden

In partnership with erz. Landscape, The Gro Garden is designed to be a wellbeing, art and greenspace where visitors and staff of Queen Elizabeth University Hospital can rest and relax in. We helped by constructing screens, frames and a wide range of seating, all from reclaimed wood.

The Challenge

This project demonstrates bringing derelict and vacant land into interim use for food growing.

A modular infrastructure system which can be assembled and easily demounted on each site has been created by erz Limited. The modular system creates a strong sense of place in what are often incoherent environments.

The Solution

The modular system was designed by erz Limited and is fabricated from waste timber by Glasgow Wood Recycling.

The project won the Low Cost Project Award and the Chairman’s Award for Architecture at the Scottish Design Awards 2011, and was shortlisted for the AJ Small Projects Award and AJ Small Projects Sustainability Award 2011.

The Challenge

Partick Housing Association asked ERZ to develop a community growing project within the back court of a mixed use block in the middle of the West End of Glasgow.

Housing, shops, pubs and an old peoples’ home surround the existing courtyard, all of which now use the new gardens. ERZ designed a space that could serve a really wide range of people – yet still have integrity and character as a back court.

The Solution

The design sits within the historic structures of the courtyard, but offers a new and secure growing environment for residents and the wider community.

Greyfriars Community Garden

The Challenge

Greyfriars Community Garden is located on a derelict piece of land in the very heart of Glasgow city centre, surrounded by building works. Glasgow City Council and Merchant City Community Council contracted ERZ to design an oasis within this urban area for local users to grow vegetables.

The Solution

The scheme includes rainwater harvesting, a communal shelter, large storage units, composting facilities and a range of growing spaces. A small lawn and picnic area enables play and informal use. Habitat value was significantly improved through the inclusion of a large area of new meadow planting.

The Challenge

Kilmarnock YMCA’s outdoor space was a dilapidated car park. Our challenge was to turn this car park into a beautiful green space – with lots of growing areas and two separate covered areas with seating.

The Challenge

A patch of derelict reclaimed industrial land adjacent to the new Possilpark Health and Care Centre was crying out for the touch of green fingers and the promise of future growth.

The Solution

Using reclaimed timber, Glasgow Wood Recycling built the Back Garden, designed by ERZ Studios. This peaceful community plot provides a green space for local individuals to grow fruit and vegetables, and plays host to a number of community events.
