Greyfriars Community Garden
Erz, the Glasgow-based landscape architecture practice asked us to help with the fabrication of their latest project in Merchant City. Using reclaimed scaffold boards, we built screens and all the structures needed for the community to grow a whole range of plants and produce.
The scheme includes rainwater harvesting, a communal shelter, large storage units, composting facilities and a range of growing spaces. A small lawn and picnic area enables play and informal use. Habitat value was significantly improved through the inclusion of a large area of new meadow planting.
Other developments built around the gardens really help to create the feeling of a city oasis, something not commonly found within this busy educational/business area of Glasgow. The garden is now heavily used by individuals and community groups from in and around the Merchant City area. Hosting lots of different events and workshops, the garden has provided a space which has really strengthen the local community.
