Project
The Nook from SAMH
The Nook from SAMH provides barrier-free access to mental health support, with no need to book an appointment, no need for referrals, and no waiting lists. Anyone looking for support can walk through the door and get help fast.
Co-designed by Anna Campbell-Jones and Finni Porter Chambers, the space was created with climate anxiety in mind. Using the products and services of Glasgow Wood, Mirrl, No Rules Wallpaper and more, the pair have designed a welcoming, comfortable and safe space for people experiencing mental health problems to visit.
See below for the full project.
Telling us about the thinking behind the space, Anna said:
“It was a really important that we used suppliers and makers based in the city, and even more so that they were sustainable.”
The kitchen table is by Mirrl, lighting by One Foot Taller, wooden furniture by Glasgow Wood, the tiles in the kitchen space are commissioned by Tenetiles, and bespoke pattern for wallpaper and fabrics by No Rules Wallpaper. All of these businesses are playing their part in making Glasgow a more sustainable city, whether that’s environmentally or socially.
Much of the other elements featured within the space are either reclaimed or made using recycled/natural materials too. The chairs around the table are vintage and the flooring and bookcase doors are made from Marmoleum by Forbo, made from natural materials.”

“We had ideas for the design of some bespoke joinery elements and felt it would be appropriate to find someone who was expert at working with locally sourced reclaimed timber. Glasgow Wood was the obvious choice.
We, the client and the people using the space, are delighted with the results. A beautiful bookcase, bespoke window seating and welcoming benches were created, and compliment the other design features within the space perfectly.”

Telling us about the patterns for the wallpaper and fabrics, Anna said:
“Throughout the space, you’ll find several bespoke patterns which were designed in collaboration with No Rules Wallpaper.
One was designed especially for the space to use on the walls and throughout the soft furnishings. Working alongside their sister company Bespoke Atelier, they held workshops with young people and service users. From these sessions, they developed a pattern which features hand drawn elements of Glasgow’s skyline, cultural references and motifs from Glasgow’s coat of arms.
I was also really pleased to include my own wallpaper collaborations with No Rules. ‘Clockwork Orange’ is in memory of the Glasgow subway trains I designed back in the 90s, and there’s also a bespoke colour way of my latest Dazzle wallpaper, a modular wallpaper which is intentionally designed not to repeat.”

"The Glasgow Wood team delivered the project with joy and dedication to detail."
Telling us about why Glasgow Wood was chosen, Finni said:
“Glasgow Wood felt like an obvious collaborator who shared the values of the project, ones of community and sustainability. The outcome was spectacular and pulled the whole project together, painting a beautiful picture of ‘nothing is worthless’, relating to both materials and people.
We opted to keep the nods to the timbers old life, like the stamps of the scaffolding board, to tell the story of new meaning and a new purpose in life. From the bespoke elements to the off-the-shelf furniture, every piece tells a unique story – one of hope, a perfect fit for the overall project because everything has the potential for new life.”
