Glasgow Wood Recycling nominated for two Inspiring City Awards!

The nominations for this year’s Inspiring City Awards have been announced – and Glasgow Wood Recycling is excited to be finalists in two categories! We have been selected for the Alastair Malloy Award for Inclusive Volunteering (sponsored by Volunteer Glasgow) and the Environmental Award.

Now in their seventh year, the Inspiring City Awards bring to life the achievements and journey of the people and organisations who make a big difference to the lives of Glaswegians.

The awards, organised by The Herald and the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, were ‘born out of the desire to recognise businesses, education institutions and charities who, every day go beyond the call of duty to make Glasgow shine.’

Speaking about the nominations, Glasgow Wood Recycling’s Chief Executive Peter Lavelle said:

“The whole team at Glasgow Wood Recycling is delighted to be recognised for our volunteering and environmental efforts. Our social enterprise being nominated for two Inspiring City Awards really acknowledges the huge amount of commitment our team put in to the model of community wood recycling.”

Richard Muir, Deputy Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, commented in The Herald:

“Glasgow never ceases to amaze me, with so many outstanding contributions from across the city. The impressive calibre of the 2019 entries demonstrate that Glasgow is a place whose citizens and businesses contribute freely to its culture and economy to the benefit of us all.”

The winners will be announced at the 2019 Inspiring City Awards, which will take place at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow on Thursday September 5, 2019 – and will be hosted by Amy Irons and David Farrell.

About Glasgow Wood Recycling’s Work

Helping businesses and communities do good with wood!

Glasgow Wood Recycling is a social enterprise and charity which finds meaningful ways to reuse and recycle waste wood. The wood waste that we collect from all over Glasgow is gathered and sorted at our South Street workshop, then reused to make quality furniture and design bespoke pieces for home, businesses and social sector organisations – anything from tables in bars to eco-gardens in schools! Through these activities we provide volunteer and training opportunities to local people, as a practical way of tackling unemployment and social exclusion.

Benefiting the environment and community

By reducing the amount of wood sent to landfill, Glasgow Wood Recycling can reduce its environmental impact. Each tonne of wood which rots in landfill is thought to produce a quantity of methane as harmful as 600 kg of CO2. So far Glasgow Wood Recycling has diverted over 4000 tonnes of wood from being wasted. We have also provided 740 volunteering opportunities as well quality training – and a route to employment – for over 190 people.
