Project

Millport Outdoor Outfitters

Located on the Isle of Cumbrae, Millport Outdoor Outfitters officially opened its doors in Summer 2025. Owner Juli worked with Stephen of Millport General Maintenance to create a rustic and welcoming space which helps to excite and inspire visitors for their onward journey on the island.

Previously an old Bank of Scotland branch, they utilised a range of our reclaimed scaffold board products to fit out the shop. Bespoke moveable storage, shelving and internal cladding all come together to make for a space which compliments the wide range of outdoor goods that the shop has on offer.

See below for the full project.

Speaking to owner Juli about the requirements of the space, she said:

“I wanted to expose as much of the existing/original historic stone work from the old Bank of Scotland branch as possible, and then complement it with as much recycled timber as we could to help soften the space. The goal was to make it feel warm and inviting like a cabin might do somewhere in the highlands.”

THE INTERIOR: The Bank of Scotland branch before

Compared to using virgin timber, reclaimed scaffold boards offer a huge amount of character which are perfect for projects like these which require less of a clean and polished look.

Displayed like art on the wall, scaffold board cladding is a great way to showcase the variety of scarring and marks present in the boards.

Combined with metal pipe frames, reclaimed scaffold boards become shelving to bring an industrial aesthetic, offering a wide range of storage in both the public and staff areas of the shop.

The old safe, now back-of-house storage

Bespoke rolling storage drawers for underneath the shelving units also helped to maximise the use of the available space.

Telling us about what she’s most proud of, Juli said:

“It’s the reaction we get from our customers coming in for the first time. They often express that they can smell the wood; and say how much we’ve done a good job of creating a beautiful store and that it’s so different from the other shops on the island… except that it reminds them of the Isle of Cumbrae Distillers (I’m quick to share that it was the first project that Stephen and I worked on together back in 2017!)”
