Community Creations: Timber Kid, the aspiring young wood-worker

Brodie has been building dens and using woodworking tools since he was aged 3. Over 10 years later and he’s now building tables, storage units and even event props, all from reclaimed wood.

It looks like Timber Kid started his furniture making career early!

Read on to learn about his favourite projects and what he’d like to do next.

Brodie first started buying reclaimed timber from Glasgow Wood in Summer of 2022 for products he was going to sell at his school fair.

He made plant stands, coasters and candle holders all from upcycled wood. Since then he’s built a dog assisted ramp, a hat holder and many other unusual pieces. He also launched is website, upgraded his workshop and submitted his trestle table desk to the Glasgow Wood Photo Challenge.

WHERE HIS PASSION BEGAN

“I got my first real tools at the age of three and everyone thought it was crazy that I used them. I have always loved wood and den building when I was younger, and this developed to a love of all things wood.”

HIS PROUDEST MOMENT

Last year Brodie submitted his new desk to the Glasgow Wood Photo Challenge. To us this looked like something out of a shop, and it was great to hear about the build behind it. He said:

“I’m definitely most proud of my desk. I sketched the idea out and designed it pretty quickly.  It was my first big woodworking project and I was looking forward to using some of the techniques I had learned online in the design.  I used reclaimed scaffold board and Scottish spruce from my favourite supplier, Glasgow Wood!

LATEST UPGRADE

Brodie saw that we had lots of amazing reclaimed drawers from the Hunterian museum archive, and he needed some under-desk storage. So he gave his desk a very functional upgrade!

Do you have a DIY project which could make use of these beautiful reclaimed drawers? At present, we have lots available in various sizes, check out our Gumtree profile or visit us as we have limited stocks.

THE DREAM PROJECT

“A bed! I would love to design a bed made of scaffold boards. I want to do this because it will test my skills because it is more complex and technical.”

Designing things for the home seems to be an enjoyable and successful area for Timber Kid. He recently built a shoe rack for his mum from reclaimed scaffold boards to help organise their entrance area at home. How smart does it look!

UPGRADING HIS WORKSHOP

When it came to upgrading his workshop and installing a workbench he encountered a challenge. With a lot of perseverence he got there in the end though, and it seems the peg board really helps with organising all his tools.

“My workshop walls are not straight so the measurements were really complicated. I measured a million times! The space is also quite tight so it had to fit perfectly.”

THE NEXT COMMISSION

Brodie has recently been commissioned to create the centre piece for a wedding. As with all bespoke pieces people in the community are making, we’re looking forward to seeing it in situ at the venue. He built this one from reclaimed pallet wood.

“I’ve been working on a bespoke anchor-shaped piece of wood which is being used as a centre piece at a family wedding. I’m looking forward to seeing the final results because I’ve used new ideas and it’s really tested my glue up skills!”

Brodie looks to have a pretty bright and exciting future ahead of him if he keeps up with all of his woodworking projects. And he started the right way – by upcycling wood which would otherwise be wasted, he’s helping to look after the future of our planet.

You can stay up to date with all of his work by following him on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, or by checking out his website.
