A bespoke bookcase side unit made using 100% reclaimed wood

Using floorboards he purchased from last years Spring Sale and a few building site salvages, Ryan Kerr has completely transformed this waste timber.

See below to learn more about the reclaimed materials Ryan has cleverly repurposed.

THE MATERIALS

“The timber I used includes reclaimed floorboards from I bought from last years Spring Sale; probably white pine & probably Victorian era judging by the dimensions. Loads of patina I couldn’t recreate!

The handrails are modern, pine and salvaged from a building site. They were surplus to requirements from a development of new flats and lying outside with a load of rubbish about to go to landfill.”

THE MAKING

“You wouldn’t believe how many carpet tacks and tiny nails were hidden under the dirt! I have a handheld metal detecting wand that fortunately works very well and saves my machines blades…

I kept the surface and door panels as original as possible to retain the patina, so only sanded these on the show side. The whole unit is made with the floorboards, run through my planer/thicknesser to straighten & clean up (after carefully checking for nails!).

We feel that pain Ryan. Our waste wood collections are 85% riddled with nails and tacks! It’s a long job, but worth doing if we can reuse more wood.

FINISHING TOUCHES

For the finish, Ryan used Osmo’s ‘natural oak’ woodstain (one coat) and one coat of Osmo Polyx transparent.

“This was a completely bespoke, made to measure piece. It was a really enjoyable little build, made all the more fulfilling knowing that I’ve saved quality timber from landfill or being turned into firewood!”
